NEW TIMES ROMAN IS an exhibition of new artwork from ten contemporary

artists.

NEW TIMES ROMAN IS NOT a monument to the past but a nod to the here and

now. It endorses an amount of permanence and cultural stamina from its very

citing in the heritage city of Bath; using the city’s historic fixedness as a set for its

own volatile and passing industry.

NEW TIMES ROMAN IS a show that revels in moments of collision and

starkness, led by the stance that the display of modernity is in itself a satisfying

guiding artistic principle.

NEW TIMES ROMAN IS NOT burdened with the lugging-around of overarching

conceptual dialogue and controlling thematic directives: more that it will function

as a collective homage to intuition, chance and visual theatre. Pieces are

introduced to the mix via matters of happenstance and an experiment of artistic

conviviality.

NEW TIMES ROMAN IS a litmus test - and snapshot of - the work, practice and

progression of a handful of recent graduates from University College Falmouth

(08/09). It uses this sole geographical counter as an exciting proposition to roll the

dice again; this time in Bath.

On your left you will see a collection of 9 images .

These images are from a set of 200, created between 1985 and 2012 by image archivist Ann Rotherhithe .

They were used in Edwin Abbot seminal 1994 study, titled The Homo Sapien ability to View the fourth dimension.

The history of the images begins in 1984 when Rotherhithe was bitten by a previously undiscovered type of mosquito whilst on holiday in Ibiza .

On returning to work as an image archivist for a library in Canada Water, London, she began to see anomalies inside the two dimensional images. Ann described seeing certain images as shining and brightly coulerd, like luminescent waves moving inside the image.

For over a year Ann carried on as normal, hoping that her hallucinations would go away. When they continued, she visited a series of specialists, from optometrists to psychiatrists. But her condition had never been seen before. The experts were baffled.

Ann’s psychiatrist asked her to record her visions, so that he could try to understand what Ann was seeing. This process led to the creation of the series of images we see today.

Physics professor Edwin Abbot was a specialist in the fields of Spacetime and the 4th dimension. In the summer of 1985 he read a article about Ann Rotherhithe in a scientific journal and instantly came to a conclusion about what it was she was seeing.

Professor Abbot had developed a theory whilst studying at Harvard university. It suggested that by altering the structure of the atoms at the heart of a human cell, it was possible to create human beings capable of moving between dimensions in space and time.

If such a theory was proven to be true, then these super-humans would be capable of teleportation and inter-dimensional travel. The cornerstone of Abbot’s theory was that certain animals already possessed an extra sense, a sense that allowed them to perceive dimensional fluctuations that were occurring naturally all around us.

Abbot was convinced that the mosquito that had bitten Ann Rotherhithe had passed onto her this ability to see through the fabric of reality.

Abbot never found the chemical compound which allowed Anne to see into other dimensions. But he used Anne’s images to study the triggers for these apparent fluctuations.

Abbot analysed the positioning of the affected areas in Ann’s images and came to the conclusion that certain objects and places were more susceptible to dimensional anomalies.

He never completed his hypothesis, and died of pneumonia in the spring of 1994. His partially completed thesis was published in the same year.

Anne continued to produce the images after Abbot’s death. In July 2013 her daughter reported her missing to the police. After an exhaustive search of the local area, she was pronounced legally dead on November 16th 2019.

Her family donated the images to the People’s Museum in December 2020.

November: the nights rapidly draw in and the shops announce Christmas; beginning with fireworks and ending with advent calendars.

To deviate from these well-trodden proceedings, Unit 11 is playing host to “November”, a short, sharp exhibition that will showcase new art from London-based practitioners. Through a combination of open submissions and a presentation of work from members of The Ministry of Progress, this event aims to present a strong body of ideas spanning multiple art platforms, but with no overriding agenda.

There will also be free beer available on the night.

Originally opened in 2009, Unit 11 is a project space situated in the heart of East London and functions as a blank canvas for flash shows and one-off projects.

Unit 11 is a five minute walk from Hackney Central Overground station and is situated along or near to the following bus routes: 30, 38, 277, 48, 55, 253, 254, 106

Unit 11 is looking for artists to feature in its latest exhibition “November”. The show will be a short, sharp event aimed at showcasing exciting new artworks by London-based artists, held to coincide with November’s First Thursday event in East London.

Interested artists should apply with a proposal of one piece of work which they would like to include. There are no stipulations on medium but the work has to have been made in 2010. Applicants should send images of the piece (or a written description if the work is not object-based) along with a short artist statement. The deadline for applications is Thursday October 28th at midday and all artists must be available during the day of November 4th to deliver and hang the work. Successful artists will be notified by October 31st. Unit 11 will take no commission from any sale.

With Work in Progress, The Ministry of Progress has a very simple aim: to compile a show that includes work made within one single calendar week.

The relevance of the calendar week is based in The Ministry’s continued interest in establishing a progressive agenda in art practice. This show will allow us to enforce that idea whilst also providing us an opportunity to show new work. We don’t view this process as an isolated event, more a fluid example of work which we will endeavour to continue.

The speed in which we will make the work will produce outcomes which will be - by their very nature - more impulsive and immediate.

Work in Progress will incorporate pieces by all Ministry members with the addition of invited guests. All exhibitors will abide by the same 7-day working structure which will provide a cohesiveness based on the comparative readings that will arise.

We will hang the show on the seventh - and final day - of the project.

As a name The Ministry Of Progress suggests a forward thinking mentality; an attitude emblematic of a desire to further our understanding of what it means to make art in a growingly technological and digitised age. As a group of artists, we are increasingly interested in making art that is a product of its time.

Progress For Sale functions within these parameters. It is simultaneously a performative piece of work and a promotional event devised to engage the audience in a live advert for the Ministry through the creation of bespoke images which can function as artworks in their own right. Through doing so, we want the event to embody the very commentary of The Ministry.

We will be setting up a work station in the gallery space, from which members of The Ministry will invite visitors to pay a small fee in return for a unique digital image. We will have a stock library of images to hand (all sourced from the internet), from which we will ask the buyer to enter into a selection process which will end in them being allocated a number of images. From this selection, a Ministry artist will then produce a composition for the customer. These images will also feature the word Progress overlaid on top of them. By branding each image, we aim to produce both an individual artwork and a promotional product.

The Artist Discussion Group will act as a facilitator to debate and discussion. Held monthly on the same evening as Time Out’s First Thursday initiative, the group will present an opportunity for practicing artists and critics to meet and brandish their thoughts and ideas around a table.

Hosted in a local McDonalds restaurant, it is The Ministry’s intention to stand away from any firmly ingrained myths that portray the artist as bohemian, tortured, a beatnik. The Artist Discussion Group is a platform for a very open – and public – debate that will attempt to find place for artistic practice in the pace of the here and now (and not in the docile bourgeoisie of the coffee shop, or the hazy-eyed stupor of a back-street boozer).

The Ministry Of Progress presents In House Artist Statement

The People’s Museum of 1962 is the centrepiece of my practice. Envisaged as a fictional creation, it was originally established by James Wyndham. The museum has four directors, each living simultaneously in a different time and each one named James Wyndham. The museum exists between the years 1962 and 2069. Its main purpose is to archive and preserve the forgotten histories of the ordinary people of Great Britain and its colonies.

The museum’s exhibits are an attempt to raise questions of how we would perceive a Britain of the future and the role of the inconsequential individual within this wider society. It attempts to explore the themes of class conflict, nationalism, colonisation, eccentricity and scientific achievement.

The work is born from extensive periods of research. There are individual elements comprised of fact but, as you may probably be able to guess, the work also draws heavily from fiction. I use distorted presentations of the truth to distance the viewer and, in turn, raise questions about the subtext of the work and its origins in truth. The work also explores human nature and how we ascertain truth from situations from the way in which they are presented to us.

I aim for the work to give the viewer an insight into a modern idea of utopia. I want to offer the viewer impossible scenarios in order to ask them to revisit past ideals – especially the rebuilding of British society – and use these as metaphors for how our new global society functions. I want to pose the question: what would be possible if these things had really happened?

Dot Boson-Higgins Documentary

Dot Boson-Higgins was born in Wamego Kansas in 1894. Orphaned as a child, she was brought up by her aunt and uncle.

Not much is known about her early life, but at the age of 14 she was sent by her aunt to Ferncliff Asylum, Kansas. Boson-Higgins had been suffering from a series of complex delusions since the age of six.

One psychiatrist’s report states;

“ Dot has told me that she has found the scientific formula to travel to another world, which she refers to as a parallel universe. When asked about this universe she can explains it in minute detail. Her creation of scientific terms and the complexity of her descriptions, lead us to believe that her delusions are of a most severe variety, however we believe that an intensive course of the revolutionary Electroconvulsive Therapy could help keep them under control.”

After six months of electroconvulsive therapy, Higgins’ willingness to voice her complex theory had diminished to the point that she was regarded as sane by her psychiatrist and released.

In fact, Higgins’ aforementioned delusions had diminished because she had found another way to voice her theories. She had been writing them down, and by the time she was sixteen she had penned volumes of text describing the foundations of quantum physics, including the first documented example of the form and purpose of the atom. All but one of these books was discovered by her aunt and destroyed.

A short time later Higgins moved to England, married a naval officer, Percy Higgins, with whom she had six children, and lived as a housewife in Plymouth until her death in 1985 at the age of 90.

After Percy’s death six years later, the house and their belongings passed to their children and grand children , it was then that Higgins’ remarkable secret was discovered.

Her grand-daughter, speaking in 1992 said;

“ Behind a wall in Gran’s pantry, we found a secret door. Behind it, there was a room, quite small about 7 feet across. In the middle she’d set up a writing table and put shelves up on the surrounding walls. One set of shelves were completely covered in books and the others were covered in all sorts of green ornaments.”

Most of Higgins’ books contain extensive theories on the generation of wind vortices, presenting the mathematical formula for air currents in a tornado. Higgins had discovered that under the right set of conditions, it was possible to use channelled air to transport objects through four dimensional space to parallel universes. The theories are so complex that many of them are still being deconstructed by physicists around the world.

The museum was offered the collection by the family in 1994, and we are currently cataloguing and transcribing all of the information contained in the room.

The most compelling twist in the tale is that experts now believe Higgins may have accidentally visited one of these parallel universes as a child. A neighbour of author L Frank Baum in Kansas, the young Dot seems to have relayed to him tales of a strange land she called Oz, a land that until now was believe to be Baum’s fictional creation. Higgins drew maps of Oz and detailed landscapes, as well as drawings of the people of Oz. All of the objects found in the room are green. Each one was numbered and the numbers are listed in a book alongside names, which on closer inspection were revealed as characters who appear in Baum’s novels - characters that some now believe could be real people.

There are 200 objects in the collection and the museum is currently recreating Higgins’ laboratory, with the help of her family. The exhibit is due to open in spring 1999.

Untitled Craft Project 2010 (Tracy Island Series), 2010

The irreverent association of the television personality Anthea Turner in the naming of the prize is the initial focus of this work. I have produced an object which manifests this relationship as its context. I have decided to recreate a seminal Blue Peter 'make' in which Turner constructs a model of Tracy Island from the popular children's TV series Thunderbirds.

This project has been conceived by myself and two other artists as a means of commenting on aesthetic judgement. The fact that the work finds itself in a prize competition with no overarching theme - and where all three pieces are formed with identical intent – the judgement will, in all-likelihood, fall to aesthetic judgement alone. It is my intention to bring this approach to artistic reading to the fore.

The way in which the work has been made is in direct response to the democratic nature of this prize. In reference to this democracy, as an artist I have decided to follow instructions that anyone can follow (through You Tube video content), I therefore aim to remove any skill-set or technical ability from the intended commentary at hand.

WOULD LIKE TO PROUDLY INTRODUCE ITS LATEST ACQUISTION

THE TAMAZUNCHALE HORN
PRESS RELEASE

This unique horn was found in January 1967, fished out of a river in Tamazunchale, Mexico by holidaying pools winner John Mandeville. Mandeville kept the horn until his death in 1999 aged one hundred and eleven , after which the horn was donated to the museum.

The specimen is pure white, 37.5cm long , 2.1cm in circumference and unlike most animal horns is completely solid. Astonishingly, carbon dating revealed that the creature it belonged to died two thousand years ago . In 2000 the horn was sent to Dr Gilberto Tozzi, a renowned zoologist and biochemist at the Royal Academy of Science in London, where it underwent three years of DNA testing. Results show that the horn does not originate from any documented species, although it presents features similar to the Bovidae and Equidae genetic groupings. Dr Tozzi has offered a speculative theory of how the creature might look;

“It is likely that it would have been large, with equine features, as this would allow support of a single, heavy, horn. Curvatures at the base of the horn suggest its location in the centre of the animal’s forehead. Examples of similar creatures have been seen in medieval tapestries, although the existence of these mythical ‘unicorns’ have always been dismissed. The horn’s ability to cause spontaneous cell regeneration has cast new light on these ancient stories. Mandeville had always asserted that it was the horn which kept him in good health, working as a fisherman in Cornwall until his accidental death. My Dear Friend,

Construction of the bus station is progressing quite rapidly. The James Bridge Steel company have agreed to take on extra staff so that the iron framework will be delivered on time - which is fantastic - but of course means that the invoicing work has doubled. At this rate, Mr Jellico anticipates completion in early May of next year. We also expect to complete well under our estimated budget.

It is not this, however, which is at the forefront of my mind; perhaps that’s why I forgot to mention it in my last letter to you. I have become far more concerned with the matter of our universe and the implications of computer science in space travel, and how it could help with the country’s regeneration. The war seems further away every day, yet we are progressing and the process of rebuilding is slow indeed.

I think perhaps space travel could offer the people new hope. I fear I may be starting to sound like a council member, after spending so many days working closely with them. The new wallpaper sounds very appropriate, but I think it will be a long time yet before I can visit again. How is the rest of the collection? I was very interested in the plans for your next expedition; it seems travel is in both our blood, although your achievements as yet stretch much further than my own .
